Made with Xara Web Designer the challenges The challenge for Haiti’s Northeast region is:     * High infant and maternal mortality rate.                             to watch a short PBS video describing the current threats to maternal health in Haiti and what can be done to increase the odds of survival for both mother and baby.     * Life expectancy of 61 years.     * High incidence of malnutrition, diabetes, high blood pressure, malaria, glaucoma, and cataracts. Why?     * No basic healthcare services available.     * No basic health education.     * No local ambulatory care in the region or emergency transportation to out-of-town hospital.     * Chronic illness made worse by poverty. the solution Clinique Espérance et Vie Clinique Espérance et Vie addresses Terrier Rouge's health care woes with the solution of long-term, sustainable health care.  This is achieved by:     * Collaborating closely with the local residents through a Community Advisory Board.     * Providing a structure, Clinique Espérance et Vie, to serve as a permanent location for      health care services.     * The completion of a clinic (in February of 2009) that offers services from visiting doctors, dentists, opthalmologists, and other professionals.     * Ongoing training for health educators and agents within the region.     * Working closely with other initiatives in the area to support education and economic stability.
