Made with Xara Web DesignerVisiting Physicians Bring Gifts of Healing to Terrier RougeHundreds of Patients Make PilgrimageDuring the months of April and May, Clinique Espérance et Vie hosted visitingphysicians from the United States and Haiti. Word spread quickly throughoutTerrier Rouge and the surrounding areas and people made the journey to receivehelp and healing, some patients visiting a doctor for the first time in their lives. Many walked long distances in 90° heat; others brought their children on bicycles. The elderly and most seriously ill arrived by moped taxi. The medical team's dayswere filled with non-stop procedures and consultations. Staff worked into theevening, seeing every patient, every day. Drs. Jonel Daphnis and Robert Gore, emergency care physicians from KingsCounty Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, worked at the Clinic for one week treating a widevariety of conditions including diabetes and hypertension, dehydration andmalnutrition, and malaria. Dr. Daphnis, a Haitian-American himself, said of hisexperience, "This visit evolved into a promise . . . to continue to learn from myNorthern Haitian family and to establish a connection between my residencyprogram and the clinic that will continue to enrich the experience of patients andhealth care workers." Dr. Gore was also moved by his experience and is alreadyplanning his return to Haiti.Dr. Bob Brown, an ophthalmologist from South Carolina, along with his wife Susanand ophthalmological assistant John Spragins, worked at the Clinic for two weeks. Dr. Brown performed 45 cataract operations! While in Haiti, Dr. Brown saw anunusual number of glaucoma patients near total blindness. Bethlehem Ministry isnow developing a program to reduce the incidence of glaucoma. Dr. Brown andhis wife were so moved by their experience in Haiti that they are planning a returnvisit in 2010, this time staying on for three weeks.Dr. Gary Fleming, a pediatrician from Athens, GA, worked with patients at the Clinicfor 10 days. His pediatric patients suffered from malnutrition, dehydration, worms,scabies, and impetigo. He also educated many new mothers on effective nursingof their newborns. Dr. Fleming has visited Terrier Rouge several times and isdeeply commited to our cause.Clinique Espérance et Vie has also been blessed with the work of physicaltherapists, Hank Wright and Trey Scott from Athens, GA. Both men have visitedthe Clinic numerous times. Mr. Wright and Mr. Scott have fitted one patient with aprosthetic leg, performed a great deal of therapy on many others, and were able toprocure a wheelchair for a girl suffering from cerebral palsy. In March, Hank Wrightbrought a group of high school students to Terrier Rouge during their Spring Break. He was able to see therapy patients while the students worked at the school andfed the hungry in the nearby town of Phaeton. Trey Scott has been so moved byhis experiences with the Haitian people that he is now serving as an activemember on the Board of Bethlehem Ministry. His entire family is planning a trip toHaiti this Christmas.Haiti is a place of unbelievable challenges but also unceasing hope.
