Economic Sustainability in Haiti

Bethlehem Ministry has joined with Partner for People & Place to create an environmentally sustainable biomass energy project in Terrier Rouge. In essence, the goal of this project is to provide both employment and a source of fuel for use and sale.

In many rural areas in Haiti, wood is the common fuel source. This has placed enormous pressure on Haiti's forests, and as the population grows, the forest disappears. Biomass fuel production can produce both solid cooking fuel and biodiesel for sale.

The Jatropha Nursery is an ongoing project to create the system for planting, harvesting, and processing plants that are high-yield producers of biomass fuel. The long-term goal is to create a company that can employ people who plant and harvest the crop, provide mechanisms for converting those crops into biofuel, and finally market the excess fuel around Haiti.
