The Project in Terrier Rouge
Pere Bruno is there to welcome the children on the first day of school.
The school is now large enough for the students who will show up this year and next, but we are approaching a time when more rooms will be needed. The current plan is to build up, making a third floor for classrooms and a chapel. |
This year there are 385 students. The students include almost 300 returning students and almost 100 new youngsters, starting off in the Montessori Kindergarten.
Construction was recently completed on a "feeding porch", which is a porch being erected around the kitchen, extending behind the school all the way to the back. Later, a second floor of teacher appartments will be added on top, and the third floor of classrooms and chapel. The space above the porch is slated for classrooms. |
Solar Energy System
The only electrical power used by this school comes from a solar energy installation. We have added panels to generate 2000 watts per hour, and we have just purchased enough to add 1600 watts per hour to that. Over a 4 hour period, this is enough to fill our batteries and provide several days of consistent power, even when the sun refuses to shine. (In Haiti, the sun seems to be there all the time!) To extend this power, we use only low power utilities, including laptop computers, high efficiency refridgerator/freezer units and ultra low power lighting.
Terrier Rouge Plan
Terrier Rouge Needs
Don't forget that scholarships are always needed, and even more of them than before. The teachers need to be paid and the children need their hot lunch every day.
